New Guidelines Recommend Annual Exams for All Pets

The American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Animal Hospital Association released new canine and feline preventative healthcare guidelines.  The guidelines recommend annual examinations for all pets, including dental assessment, pain assessment and body and muscle condition scoring.

Annual heartworm and internal parasite testing is recommended for cats and dogs, while cats should also receive retrovirus testing (feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency virus). Year round parasite control is recommended for all pets, along with customized therapeutic options based on information gathered during the subjective, objective and assessment stages.

Owners sometimes have an inadequate understanding of the need for routine examinations; as a result the prevalence of preventable diseases in pets is on the rise.

The guidelines are available at AVMA.org, JAAHA.org and AAHANET.org.
